According to an official statement, the honour, conferred on officers with outstanding records of integrity, efficiency and dedication, was described by SSP Mahatta as “a collective achievement of my team in Cachar Police.”

He said the force works tirelessly under challenging conditions, adding that he dedicated the award to “every officer who stands guard for the people of Cachar.”

Since taking charge, Mahatta has initiated targeted crime-control measures, strengthened intelligence gathering and promoted police-community engagement.

His tenure has seen swift responses to emergencies, decisive action against organised crime, and public awareness drives on drug abuse, cyber safety and traffic discipline.

Cachar Police under his leadership have mounted successful operations against narcotics trafficking, cross-border smuggling and rural law-and-order issues.

The MHA also recognised two officers from the 6th Assam Police Battalion (APBn), Kathal — Assistant Commandant Nabin Ch Sharma and ABSI Rabindra Singha — for distinguished service.

Assistant Commandant Sharma, who joined the force in 1988 and took his current post in 2024, is known for his dependability in law-and-order duties, particularly in supervising Border Outpost Platoons in remote inter-state border areas. He has received 98 rewards and commendations, including the “Swatantrata ki Swarna Jayanti Padak” from the President of India in 2002.

ABSI Singha, who began service in 1991 and was promoted to Sub-Inspector in 2024, is recognised for his meticulous work as a Reserve Officer, sound knowledge of administrative procedures and disciplined service record.

The recognition, the statement added, is both an honour for the officers and an inspiration for the community as the nation marks its Independence Day.
