State flood havoc on, 4 embankments breached

Death toll mounts to 35 ** CM inspects flood-affected areas in Golaghat, takes stock of KNP

GUWAHATI, July 2:  The second wave of flood continues to wreak havoc in the state breaching embankments in four districts on Tuesday leading to the state government to deploy rescue teams in several districts.

In Golaghat, breach occurred at Bonkual River under Bokakhat R.C on Tuesday morning.

In Jorhat the left ring bundh of Mujoijan/ Puthinadi breached at Pirakata Habigaon under Teok Revenue Circle.

In Nagaon flood waters breached an embankment at Hatimura Jakhlabandha under Kaliabor revenue circle.

Raging flood waters breached an embankment at Jagunidhari village in Majuli damaging approximately 70-80m, ASDMA report stated.

Two persons have been rescued from the breached area at Jugunidhari village but one house fully washed away under Majuli Revenue Circle, a report issued by ASDMA stated.

Rescue operations carried out at Dergaon, Khumtai and Bokakhat Revenue Circle by SDRF.

Another team of NDRF and Indian Army from Jorhat has been also deployed to affected sites of Dergaon, Khumtai and Bokakhat Revenue Circle for rescue operation

The SDRF and NDRF carried out rescue missions at Margherita Revenue Circle in Tinsukia, Majuli and Ujani Majuli revenue circle.

As on Monday the ASDMA stated that as many as 6,71165 people have been affected by flood in 1275 villages in 20 districts and 67 Revenue Circles have been affected by Flood. The flood affected districts are Biswanath, Cachar, Charaideo, Darrang, Chirang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup, Lakhimpur, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Morigaon, Nagaon, Majuli, Karimganj, Tamulpur, Tinsukia & Nalbari.

Altogether 35 persons lost their lives due to the flood including 2 casualties in the last 24 years, ASDMA stated.

Altogether 8142 persons are staying in 72 relief camps in the state.

The Brahamaputra at Neamatighat (Jorhat), Tezpur (Sonitpur) Guwahati (Kamrup), Dhubri (Dhubri); Subansiri at Badatighat (Lakhimpur); Burhidihing at Chenimari (Dibrugarh); Dikhou at Sivasagar; Disang at Nanglamuraghat (Sivasagar); Dhansiri at Numakigarh (Golaghat); Jia-Bharali at NT Road Crossing (Sonitpur); Kopili at Kampur (Nagaon); Puthimari at NH Road Crossing (Kamrup); Beki at Barpeta Road Bridge Dhaleswari at (Hailakandi), Kushiyara at Karimganj, Barak river at B.P Ghat flowing above danger level according to CWC report as on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday visited the flood-affected Bankuwal at Bokakhat sub-division in Golaghat district and inspected the breach point of the area in Bokakhat subdivision.

Sarma took a boat journey to reach out to the area at Bankuwal where the current flood breached a point of an embankment. As a result of the breach around 72 villages got affected.

Sarma interacted with the flood-affected people taking shelter on the embankment and took note of the flood induced damage.

Sarma also visited the temporary relief camp set up at Kamargaon Higher Secondary school and took stock of the relief materials including facilities being provided to the camp inmates. He also enquired about the medical facilities, safe drinking water and baby food being given to the inmates in the camp. While talking to the flood affected people, he assured them of all possible help from the government.

The Chief Minister also said that once the flood water recedes, the breach point will be repaired using latest technology and action will be taken to facilitate the flood victims’ early return to their respective homes. He also said that Team Assamhas been unrelenting in its endeavour to ensure relief and rehabilitation of the flood affected people.

Sarma asked the district commissioner to ensure that the flood victims get adequate help from the administration. He asked the DC to ensure availability of adequate fodder for domestic animals sheltered in the relief camps.

Agriculture minister Atul Bora, MLAs Biswajit Phukan, and senior officers of district administration and the line departments were present during Chief Minister’s visit to the flood affected areas.

Sarma during his visit to Bokakhat also spent time in the Kaziranga National Park and took note of the animals affected by the surging flood water in the park.

Upon sighting a rhino along with its cub apparently caught in the flood water, he also asked the park authority to rescue animals and put them in safer areas.

On Sunday, the Indian Air Force (IAF) had rescued eight State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel and a revenue official from Jonai in Dhemaji district when they were stranded in another sandbar area during relief operations.

Dibrugarh district has been severely affected in the current wave with the major town in Upper Assam inundated for the sixth consecutive day.
