KHERONI, Oct 6: Four stranded workers from West Karbi Anglong were rescued from Nilapara in Puri, Odisha, after falling victim to a job fraud. The rescued workers have been identified as Sar-im Kro, Dhansing Phangcho, Gautam Sing Inghi, and Birsing Terang.
The group had travelled from Kheroni in search of employment. Birsing Terang had gone to Puri two months earlier and was lured by fraudsters who promised him a job at a company named RHI. He was asked to pay Rs 12,000 in advance. However, instead of being given a job, he was locked inside a building in Nilapara and survived for two months on just two handfuls of rice per day, without pay or proper shelter.

Eventually, the fraudsters promised to release Birsing if he brought in three more workers from Assam. In a desperate attempt to save himself, Birsing contacted Sar-im, Dhansing, and Gautam and lured them to Puri with false promises of employment. Upon arrival, they too were trapped by the same group.
The families of the victims alerted West Karbi Anglong District Congress President Augustine Inhi, who took up the matter. With the intervention of Dr Smruti Ranjan Lenka, General Secretary of the Indian Youth Congress and a resident of Odisha, the Puri police were able to rescue all four men.
The workers have since been safely brought back to Assam.
