The vibrant celebration was held at the Sukapha Complex of the Tai Ahom Cultural Society at Dharamnala. Men, women and youth dressed in traditional Ahom attire marked the occasion in a festive spirit.

This year’s Sukapha Divas held added significance for the community, which expressed satisfaction with the Assam Cabinet’s recent decision to approve the Group of Ministers’ report recommending Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for six communities: Tai Ahom, Chutia, Moran, Motok, Koch-Rajbongshi and Tea Tribes (Adivasis).

The report was tabled on the final day of the State Legislative Assembly’s winter session on Saturday.

The celebration began with the hoisting of the society’s flag by its president, Putul Chetia, assisted by general secretary Bikrom Handique.

A meeting was held where speakers highlighted the life and legacy of Sukapha. Society president Putul Chetia, who chaired the meeting, called for strengthening brotherhood among all communities in Assam.

Welcoming the state government’s move to accord ST status as recommended by the GoM, he expressed gratitude to chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and said the decision was timely and significant for all six communities.

He added, “I pray for peace and brotherhood among all communities to live together as one entity.”
