The Tikak Colliery, nestled under the banner of Northeastern Coalfields Coal India Ltd Margherita has long cast a shadow over the tribal villages of the region, including the cherished Malu gaon as the NEC decision to transform these ancestral lands into dumping grounds has sparked a fierce and prolonged struggle between the local residents and the authorities, as the echoes of discontent reverberate through the ages.

Despite the persistent objections raised by the villagers, their pleas have seemingly fallen on deaf ears, with local organisations and residents alleging that the authorities have turned a blind eye to their plight as once-pristine landscapes, steeped in history and tradition, now bear the scars of neglect and indifference.

In a stirring display of solidarity, the All Assam Tangsa Student Union joined hands with the residents of Malu gaon on Tuesday night orchestrating a public gathering. It breathed life into the village streets as the student organisation unleashed a powerful condemnation of the NEC authorities, accusing them of encroaching upon the sacred lands of the tribal community.

Nayung Mossang president of All Assam Tangsa Student Union said, “Voices raised in unison demanded an immediate cessation of these transgressions, their words carrying the weight of generations past and the hopes of those yet to come as the rally served as a clarion call, a warning that reverberated through the valleys and hills, if NEC CIL Margherita authorities persist in their actions, the community stands ready to unleash a torrent of intense protest programme fortified by the unbreakable bonds of kinship and shared purpose.”

“Since centuries peace loving indigenous Tangsa community people have been peacefully residing at Historical Malu gaon but the sudden decision of the management of NEC CIL Margherita to forcefully turn Malu gaon into Coal dumping ground have threatened their identity as Malu gaon a home of more than 500 Tangsa community with a total of 150 Tangsa houses shall fight till last drop of blood remain in their body,” Mossang added.

Tangsa community people are not against the coal dumping but the sudden decision of turning Malu gaon into coal dumping ground have given us sleepless night, we request NEC to change the decision and shift the coal dumping ground project to other place, Mossang said.

As the torches cast their radiant glow upon the faces of the resolute villagers, the scene painted a portrait of a people unbowed, their spirits alight with the fire of justice, in the historic tapestry of Malu village, this moment shall be etched as a testament to the enduring power of a united community, rising like a phoenix from the ashes of adversity to reclaim their heritage and forge a future of their own making, said Tehon Hakhun village pradhan of Malu village of Ledo under Margherita Co-District.
