SIVASAGAR, July 28: Addressing the commemorative meeting of the Desbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan in the Seu-ka-Pha Bhawan which was presided over by DDC Sivasagar Subham Gowala, Dr. Sabyasachi Mahanta, principal, Gargaon College, said that Phookan’s life can be divided into four phases-his early life, his education and professional life, his association with the National Congress and his socio- literary works. Dr. Mahanta spoke in detail about his life and works as the appointed speaker of the meeting. Dr. Saumerjyoti Mahanta, principal, Sivasagar Commerce College inaugurated the meeting and also spoke of the distinguished services Tarun Ram Phookan did for the people of Assam as a national IC leader, a writer, and a Congress volunteer. Addressing the gathering, senior journalist Manoj Kumar Borthakur said that Desbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan was in fact the first modern Assamese and was a multifaceted personality. Prof Prabin Kumar Sarma of Sivasagar Girls’ College, in his speech, said that Tarun Ram Phookan was a strong and unwavering voice within the Congress leader of national reputation.
The meeting was attended among others by ADCs, Sivasagah Karmadev Brahma and Mandira Baruah, assistant commissioners Manali Rajak and Nazhat Nasreen, and inspector of schools, Kamaljyoti Gogoi. Subham Gowala thanked the participants and hoped that the new generation will try to imbibe the spirit Desbhakta tried to instill through his works.
