DIPHU, Nov 20: In a significant development, traders from Nagaon district carrying out their operations in the West Karbi Anglong alleged that the entry tax collected from goods at the gate of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) does not mention the amount.

The traders in Nagaon from Rajagaon, Kampur, Kusua, Singmari, and Madhapara cross into West Karbi Anglong to do business in Baithalangso, Hamren and other areas.

They alleged that the entry tax collected by the gate inside Karbi Anglong does not mention the amount collected on the receipt as the rate imposed on goods is very high. The people engaged at the checkpoint to collect tax do not spare even the local vendors with small quantities of vegetables taken for sale to the Baithalangso daily market.

Lessee at Ran Bey village checkpoint, Chesong Bey, said taxes were imposed as per the list prepared by the taxation department.

Bey said, “The checkpoint was set up just four days back and we collected taxes as the list given to us by the taxation department. We have done nothing illegal. But some businessmen from Nagaon district have created confusion and stopped vehicles from Karbi Anglong from entering Nagaon.”

He also informed that on Monday, Kampur Circle Officer, Ananya Lahkar entered Karbi Anglong and told Bey that the checkpoint is illegal as it is in Nagaon district. Bey replied to the Circle Officer that the checkpoint was set up inside West Karbi Anglong, hence not illegal.

Bey also stated that many traders were doing business without proper documents and trade licenses issued by the taxation department of KAAC.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the Taxation Advisory Board, Lipson Bey convened a meeting with leaseholders (lessees) of goods entry gate checkpoints of Baithalangso, Ranima, Tumpreng, Oguri and Langhemphi (Khanduli) and businessmen at Forest Guest House, Dongkamukam to discuss the functioning of the checkpoints as per Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) of the taxation department.

Bey informed that the meeting with businessmen and leaseholders was attended by KAAC secretary, I/c taxation department, Ibon Teron; additional SP of West Karbi Anglong, Faiza Ahmed Borbhuiya; superintendent of taxes, Mongolsing Taro and others.

They held long discussions and advised lessees to operate the checkpoints as per SOP. At entry gates, a receipt with the amount mentioned for entry of each vehicle will be issued.

Notably, the taxation department of KAAC has recently started setting up goods entry gate checkpoints for the imposition of tax entering the Karbi Anglong market. On an experimental basis, it was started at Parokhuwa, Garampani, Khatkhati and other places in Karbi Anglong.

The goods entry checkpoint at Ran Bey village under the Baithalangso sector was set up on November 14.
