TEZPUR, July 14: The Academic Council of Tezpur University, along with the Board of Management, the university’s highest executive body, has officially approved a proposal to establish thirteen new departments. These departments encompass diverse fields such as Pharmaceutical Sciences, Petroleum Technology, Tourism Management, Yoga and Sports Science, Economics, Statistics, Psychology, Library and Information Science, among others. This development aims to broaden the academic offerings and cater to the evolving educational needs of students.
To discuss the future roadmap of the university and the proposed new departments, Professor Shambhu Nath Singh, the vice chancellor of Tezpur University, paid a visit to Professor M Jagadesh Kumar, the chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), in New Delhi recently. During the meeting, various aspects of higher education were deliberated upon, highlighting the importance of multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary courses in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Professor Singh emphasised the university’s commitment to fulfilling its mandate and aligning with the NEP 2020. He further requested the chairman to convert the existing Teaching Learning Centre, currently conducting capacity building programs in higher education, into a UGC- Human Resource Development Centre to support the implementation of the NEP.
The chairman of the UGC expressed assurance in providing the necessary resources and support to Tezpur University to foster its growth and achieve academic excellence.
