JORHAT, April 20: Thieves burgled a rented house and attempted to break into two others in the same building at Arunadoy Path, Na-Ali area under Lichubari Police Outpost here on Tuesday.
As per information available thieves broke into the house of Rubul Bora during the day and reportedly decamped with jewellery and cash when the occupants were not at home.
Bora said that he had gone to bring his family members back from his home near the Jorhat by-pass and while on the way he received a phone call from his wife that someone had broken into their house.
Bora said that he returned home immediately and found the door open and a steel almirah inside the house was broken from which jewellery and cash were stolen.
Thieves also broke the locks of doors of two other houses in the building and made attempts to take away valuables. Police were informed and a police team inspected the site of the incident and started investigation.
In another incident two persons were arrested on Tuesday by policemen of Titabar in the district.
Anil Manki and Jintu Hazarika were arrested on charges of demanding money from a resident of Mahimabari village via WhatsApp under the pretext of being a member of a militant outfit.
A police source stated that on the basis of a complaint lodged by Ajit Saikia of Mahimabari village under Titabar Police Station at the police station alleged that the duo a few days ago demanded Rs 2.5 lakh from him in the name of militant organisation and thereafter reportedly while collecting Rs 1.5 lakh from him, the two accused were nabbed.
Investigation was under progress, the source said, adding that both were found to be extorting money by pretending to be cadres of two militant outfits.
The source urged people to immediately inform police if such kind of extortion threats were received.
