India Meteorological Department signs MoU with Assam University

TEZPUR, July 26: On Thursday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Assam University, Silchar, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the installation of an X-Band Doppler Weather Radar on the university campus. The MoU was signed by Dr RM Pant, vice-chancellor of Assam University, and KN Mohan, scientist-G & head of the Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati.

From the IMD side, Dr Sanjay O’Neill Shaw, scientist-F, and Dr SI Laskar, scientist-E, were present. Representatives from Assam University included Dr PK Nath, registrar; Prof Piyush Kumar Pandey, director of IQAC; Shubhadeep Dhar, finance officer; Dr Suprabir Roy, controller of Examinations; Jayant Bhatta, director of the College Development Council; Prof Parthankar Choudhury, dean of the School of Ecology and Environmental Science; and Dr Atri Deshmukhya from the department of Physics.

The IMD is in the process of installing various meteorological instruments in the north-eastern states, including 11 Doppler Radars. The X-Band Doppler Weather Radar will aid in research and significantly improve weather forecasting for Cachar and nearby regions.
