Soon after the training programme seed distribution was held, where Member of Autonomous Council (MAC) of Lumbajong MAC constituency, Johny Timung attended as the chief guest and distributed the coffee seeds for plantation to 17 new coffee growers who have applied for the seeds.
Timung encouraged the intended coffee growers who said that to become economically dependent people should take up farming in their own land. Timung said, “There is abundant land and people can take up farming to rely on themselves. Instead of solely depending on the government to support them and to make use of their own land, people can go for cultivation of cash crops like rubber, sandalwood, agarwood trees, coffee and other agriculture allied activities like fishery, poultry, cattle farming and more in order to be self-reliant.”
To be a man of practical purpose Timung said, “Speaking is something and action is something. To be able to tell others as a public leader, I have started to do coffee cultivation myself. Let us start the coffee revolution by encouraging more people to take up coffee cultivation to transform Karbi Anglong into an economic stability region of Northeast.” The joint director (Extension), Coffee Board, North Eastern Region from Guwahati, Ryntathiang said that though land elevation is less, coffee grows well as per the climatic condition of the region. There are many prospects for coffee growers here. He also informed about the various schemes available for coffee growers supported by the Coffee Board. There are schemes like coffee expansion scheme, raising of group nursery for groups and SHG members, quality upgradation scheme, water augmentation, sprinklers, marketing scheme and many more. The subsidy rate is 75% in all these schemes, he informed.
