DIPHU, Feb 28: The Karbi hills resonated with solemn remembrance on Saturday as the people of Assam honoured the legacy of their founding leader, Semson Sing Ingti on his 78th death anniversary.
The Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), alongside the general public, organised a commemorative event at the Semson Sing Ingti Park in Diphu, the administrative headquarters of the district. Dignitaries and citizens gathered to pay floral tributes at the statue of the leader, affectionately known as “Ru” (Teacher/Mentor).

Semson Sing Ingti is revered as the architect of the Mikir Hills District, later renamed Karbi Anglong. In the 1940s, he spearheaded a pivotal movement to mobilise the Karbi tribe, successfully demanding a separate administrative district that reflected the identity and needs of its dominant population. Today, that vision has evolved into the Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts, both governed by the KAAC.
The Chief Executive Member (CEM) of KAAC, Dr Tuliram Ronghang, led the ceremony by garlanding the statue of the late leader. He was joined by several Members of the Autonomous Council (MACs), senior officials and local dignitaries.
Reflecting on the significance of the day, Dr Ronghang shared a message on social media:
“With heartfelt prayers and floral tributes, we remember Ru Semson Sing Ingti, the founder of Karbi Anglong, on his 78th death anniversary. His visionary leadership and selfless dedication to the people will forever remain in our hearts. We are eternally grateful for his legacy.”
The anniversary serves as a perennial reminder of the struggle for self-determination and the cultural identity of the Karbi people, a journey catalysed by Ingti’s early leadership.
