TEZPUR, July 24: Tezpur University has successfully concluded a week-long workshop focused on the review of Assamese translations of short science books published by the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research–National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (CSIR–NIScPR).
Organised by the Department of Linguistics and Language Technology (LLT) in collaboration with the National Translation Mission (NTM), Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysuru, the workshop aimed to finalise Assamese versions of five science titles translated under a nationwide initiative to promote scientific temper among young readers through Indian languages.
Tezpur University Vice Chancellor Prof Shambhu Nath Singh, who attended the valedictory session as chief guest, praised the department’s efforts in enhancing regional language resources and linguistic inclusivity.
Emphasising the role of translation in democratising access to knowledge, he underscored its significance in a linguistically diverse region like Northeast India.
Other speakers included Prof Chandan Kumar Sharma, Dean of the School of Humanities & Social Sciences; Prof Mrinmoy Kumar Sarma, Dean of Research & Development; Dr Tariq Khan, Officer-in-Charge of NTM, CIIL Mysuru; Dr Arup Kumar Nath, Head of the Department of LLT; and Dr Amalesh Gope.
A highlight of the session was the formal release of a new book titled Linguistic Anthropology and Ethnolinguistic, co-authored by Dr Bipasha Patgiri of Tezpur University and Mr Sushanta Rajkhowa of Assam Down Town University.
Jointly published by the Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology and Tezpur University, the book explores the relationship between language, ethnicity, and identity in Northeast India.
