DIPHU, Aug 21: Handloom & Textile Department held a weavers’ conference cum ceremonial distribution programme in collaboration with Adult Education Department, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) at Joysing Doloi Auditorium here to inform the weavers about Swa Nirvar Naari scheme for self-sustainability.
Attending the cheque and handloom distribution ceremony the chief executive member (CEM), Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Tuliram Ronghang said a discussion is held with the weavers of Karbi Anglong on the benefit of schemes for them. The KAAC is supporting the Handloom & Textiles Department to help weavers on the production of traditional garments so that it can be promoted at the international level.
The CEM said, “The Handloom department is providing a one time financial assistance to weavers. Each Handloom Co-operative Society is given a financial assistance of Rs 20,000 and yarns, fly shuttle looms and accessories. While from the Adult Education Department is providing each SHG a onetime financial assistance of Rs 10,000 and a sewing machine.”
Executive Member (EM), KAAC, Handloom & Textiles and Adult Education, Madhuram Lekthe said this weavers’ meet is organised to help the weavers to become self-dependent through the production of handloom products like traditional clothes and dresses.
The government of Assam is helping the weavers with the ‘Swa Nirvar Naari’ scheme, the EM said.
The EM said, “In West Karbi Anglong there are 15 registered Handloom Co-operative Societies, 20 in Diphu and Howraghat LACs and 15 in Bokajan LAC. These Co-operative Societies will get financial assistance of Rs. 20,000. The Adult Education department provides a sewing machine to each SHG. They will also get financial assistance of Rs 10,000 each.”
In the first session the assistant director, Handloom & Textiles, Tapash Kumar Das gave a PowerPoint presentation on the new flagship scheme launched by the Govt of Assam, ‘Swa Nirvar Naari’ for weavers’ self-dependence. Under this scheme, the weavers have to register with the Handloom & Textiles department to avail the benefit.
More than 1,500 weavers attended the programme.
MP Horensing Bey, MLAs Dorsing Ronghang, Bidyasing Engleng, and Rupsing Teron, EMs and Members of Autonomous Council of KAAC attended the programme.
