DIBRUGARH, Oct 16: Two books by the former principal of DHSK College and eminent writer, late Dr Dimbeswar Chaliha, were launched at Dibrugarh.
Dr Dimbeswar Chaliha translated the world-famous book by naturalist EPG, ‘Wildlife of India’.
The book was launched by Dr Parmanand Mohanta, retired professor, department of Physics, Dibrugarh University. The second book was launched by Dr Sashikanta Saikia, principal of DHSK College and eminent writer.
Inaugurating the first book, Dr Mohanta said Dr Chaliha was a very knowledgeable person. Despite his important responsibilities as principal, he continued to write literature tirelessly. He said the late Chaliha was an invaluable asset to the Assamese literary world and made significant contributions to literature.
Recalling his time with the Assam Science Society, Dr Mohanta said Chaliha’s work still inspires everyone. The book is about the wildlife of India and provides a detailed description of various places, as well as the forests and wildlife of Assam. The foreword of the book was written by then-Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
The program began with a lamp-lighting ceremony at the portrait of the late Dr Dimbeswar Chaliha. During the same event, held on Tuesday afternoon, the third edition of his children’s poetry book, ‘Fechu Raja Hall’, was launched by Dr Sashikanta Saikia. He stated that Dr Chaliha was not only popular as a principal but also well-established as a writer and literary figure. He was a writer, poet, naturalist, and popular science author.
He cited many examples of books written by Dr Chaliha, noting that each one reflects his perspective on life. He also mentioned that the Assamese translation of ‘Wildlife of India’ can serve as a handbook for researchers.
The program was anchored by Barnali Barua, with the purpose of the meeting explained by Dr Dimbeswar Chaliha’s son, Dr Jayanta Madhav Chaliha.
Dr Dimbeswar Chaliha’s wife, Dalimi Chaliha, shared her feelings at the event. It was attended by Dr Dilip Kumar Bhuyan, former principal of MDKG College; Dr Bharti Dutta, former professor of DHSK College; National Award-winning teacher and prominent writer Gandheshwar Saikia; and many others who remembered Dr Chaliha’s presence. Dr Amulya Goswami, former professor of the department of Chemistry at Dibru College; former principal of Kanoi Commerce College, Dr Raghunath Barbara; president of GB Kanoi College, Abhimanyu Barua; and hundreds of distinguished dignitaries were also present.
