UKPFL Leaders Apprehended In Diphu

DIPHU, Oct 30: The police apprehended two self-styled leaders of the United Karbi People’s Front Liberation (UKPFL) from Dikrenglangso area in Diphu in the early hours on Monday.

The accused have been identified as president of  UKPFL, Harlongbi Engti alias M Kathar and secretary of the organization Sarmon Hanse alias Chesong Ingjai.

Acting on a tip off, a police team from the Diphu Police Station conducted a special operation to apprehend the two leaders of UKPFL. The police also recovered two mobile handsets, two mobile batteries, a purse, an earphone, a cable wire and burnt metal remains of a keypad phone which had been used for demanding money.  The police also recovered a motor cycle bearing the registration number ‘AS 09H-9884’ from the duo.

Police said that during the interrogation, the duo confessed to forming an extremist group with the name UKPFL. The duo had reportedly served a ransom note to Jirsong Terang, a teacher of Ronghingchong in Diphu on October 17. They had demanded a ransom of Rs 7 lakhs from the teacher for the purpose of purchasing arms for the outfit. The ransom note reportedly carried the logo of UKPFL.

Later the additional superintendent of police (crime) of Karbi Anglong, Nayan Moni Barman said, “The self-styled leaders of UKPFL Harlongbi Engti and Sarmon Hanse demanded a ransom of Rs 7 lakhs from Jirsong Terang, a teacher of Howraghat High School. The duo was apprehended by police when they came to claim the ransom amount.”

A case was registered at the Diphu Police Station.
