Guwahati, Oct 26: The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) pro-talk faction has called for reservations in 94 assembly constituencies for the indigenous people of Assam.
ULFA (pro-talk) general secretary Anup Chetia stated that they have submitted their suggestions to the Union government regarding the draft peace agreement and are awaiting a response.
Chetia emphasised the importance of this reservation following the delimitation exercise. In August, the Election Commission retained Assam’s assembly seats at 126 and the Lok Sabha constituencies at 14 in its final delimitation report.
The state has seven Rajya Sabha seats, and the names of one parliamentary and 19 assembly constituencies have been revised. Chetia expressed confidence in the current government’s ability to peacefully resolve longstanding issues related to ULFA.
He also demanded an accurate National Register of Citizens for Assam and insisted that the cut-off year for implementing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act for Assam should be 1951, not 2014. The CAA aims to grant Indian citizenship to Hindus, Jains, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Parsis from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan who entered India on or before December 31, 2014.
Chetia expressed hope that the peace agreement with the Union government would be signed soon, marking an end to the issues raised by the organisation. ULFA (pro-talk) vice president Pradip Gogoi stated that major issues of the people would be addressed at the grassroots level once the agreement is signed.
