ULFA(I) cadre arrested at Palengi; arms and ammunition seized

SIVASAGAR, May 6: A senior cadre of ULFA (Independent) was arrested by police from Palengi in Sivasagar district and arms, ammunition and incriminating documents were recovered from his possession.

The accused, identified as Biren Chetia alias Rantu Asom, was apprehended during a raid conducted at Dhyan Pathar in Palengi, around 20 km from Sivasagar town, late on Monday night.

According to police, the operation was led by Additional Superintendent of Police Arif Ahmed with support from personnel of Demow Police Station.

Senior Superintendent of Police Papori Chetia said police had received information that the ULFA(I) cadre was hiding in the area and was allegedly attempting to hand over the ammunition to others.

Acting on the input, police raided a house in the early hours and arrested him.

Police recovered one pistol, 10 rounds of ammunition, seven grenades, one bottle grenade, a torchlight and cash amounting to ₹13,500 from his possession.

The accused, a resident of Bejapathar under Moran Police Station, was reportedly staying at the house of one Bipul Sensuwa in Palengi.

The SSP said further details would be disclosed after interrogation.
