GUWAHATI, Oct 17: The Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has issued a strong statement condemning what it termed as “political opportunism” in the aftermath of the death of renowned singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg. In a press conference held at the Assam Pradesh BJP headquarters, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan, party spokesperson Suranjan Dutta called on the people of Assam to remain vigilant and identify those attempting to exploit public emotion for political gain.

Dutta acknowledged the deep sorrow felt across the state over Zubeen Garg’s untimely demise, stating, “We are genuinely heartbroken. Such is the weight of grief that we are unable to focus on anything beyond this tragic loss.” However, he expressed concern over the activities of certain individuals and groups whom he accused of manipulating the situation for political benefit.

“From the very beginning, some people with a clear political agenda have tried to use Zubeen Garg’s death as a platform for misinformation and provocation,” Dutta alleged. “They have created false narratives, spread conspiracy theories, and misled the youth to foster unrest in the state. It is becoming clear who the genuine admirers of Zubeen were, and who are merely using his name as a political tool.”

Citing a recent incident at Buxar jail, Dutta said such provocations may be part of a broader conspiracy. “What happened at Buxar shows signs of being driven by an organised and malicious nexus. These forces want to destabilise Assam, to create chaos similar to what we have seen in other politically unstable regions,” he said.

Dutta warned that such elements are trying to project themselves as fans or sympathisers, while their real intent is to create political instability and target Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. “They believe they can win the 2026 elections by weaponising public sentiment over Zubeen Garg’s death,” he said.

He urged the public to remain grounded in facts, not emotions and to support the ongoing investigation led by the state government and law enforcement agencies. “Justice for Zubeen Garg must be rooted in evidence, not political theatrics. It is only through a thorough, fact-based investigation that the guilty will be punished,” he said.

Appealing for public cooperation, the BJP spokesperson Suranjan Dutta stated, “Let us not allow emotions to be exploited. Let us work together to identify and expose those attempting to use Zubeen Garg’s death for political motives. Only then can truth and justice truly prevail.”
