GOSSAIGAON, Sept 1: The ruling United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) marked the start of their pre-election campaign to strengthen their base in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) with a grand joining program held recently at Shymaguri playground in Srirampur, under Gossaigaon sub-division in Kokrajhar district.

The BTR government, led by CEM Pramod Boro, following the announcement by chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma that the Saffron party will contest the BTR elections independently, organised this grand joining program in a BJP stronghold. This move by UPPL in BJP’s territory saw about six thousand people from different communities joining the UPPL party.

Participating as the chief guest at the grand joining program held at Shymaguri playground in Srirampur under the 3 No Srirampur constituency, BTR chief Pramod Boro stated that after the BTR Accord, the establishment of peace in the region has brought smiles and joy to the people. He highlighted the constant efforts of the BTR government in building a prosperous BTR, ensuring the security of all communities, preserving language, literature, and culture, and working tirelessly to help every child grow into a valuable human resource.

Despite the scorching heat, thousands of people attended the rally, where Boro expressed the desire to forget the 40-year dark history—a time when people were afraid to leave their homes, students were scared to attend schools and colleges, constantly worrying about when and where a bomb might explode or a shootout might occur. However, with the efforts of various community organisations and the public, peace was established following the 2020 Accord. Pramod Boro also warned that no one should attempt to create a bad atmosphere again as peace has been established, divisions among communities have reduced, and harmony has been fostered in the region.

In his speech, the BTR chief executive member also spoke about various ambitious projects undertaken by the BTR government, including the establishment of a model college in Srirampur, the construction of the Sujit Narzary Auditorium, and a multi-crore auditorium named after Marjit Basumatary.

He also mentioned that a Rs 30 crore tourist hub and a large market are being developed in the abandoned area near the inter-state check post in Srirampur. Once completed, thousands of people will be able to engage in trade and business there. Additionally, the BTR government is giving significant importance to land rights. A statue and project in the name of Sidho-Kanu, costing Rs 1 crore, are also under construction. The government is focusing on the development of all classes of people, considering the 35-lakh people of the region as their own, and has made provisions for jobs without accepting any bribes.

Meanwhile, executive member Wilson Hasda stated that along with peace, the government is also working towards improving education and healthcare in Srirampur. He expressed confidence that the public will soon witness Srirampur as a developed region due to the government’s efforts. He mentioned that this government is working for the poor, traders, employees, and labourers.

On the other hand, Rwngwra Narzary said that UPPL has ensured the safety and security of the 35-lakh people in the region. He emphasised that the UPPL party, which has never faced defeat in any election, has won by-elections, Lok Sabha elections, etc., after taking over governance, and has always prioritised peace for the people without considering caste or creed while focusing on the development of their languages, religions, and economic progress.

The rally was attended by MLA Jiron Basumatary, MCLE and political secretary Madhav Chetry, general secretary Raju Narzary, vice president Afzal Haque Sarkar, former MLA Hemendra Nath Brahma, former executive members Christom Tudu, Chandi Basumatary, Laxiram Tudu, and many leaders from the central committee, district, block, and primary committees. The program was conducted by block president Nicholas Hasda. Over six thousand people joined the UPPL during the rally.
