JORHAT, July 23: The Jorhat district unit of Veer Lachit Sena, Assam, on Wednesday staged a protest march demanding eviction of illegal encroachments on government land along the Bhogdai river, Tocklai, and other water bodies across the town and district.
The rally, which commenced from the Jorhat Stadium, saw protesters carrying banners and raising slogans calling for the removal of encroachments on rivers, streams, ponds, and historical sites.
They alleged that such lands had been unlawfully occupied by traders, businessmen, and individuals of suspected Bangladeshi origin.
The organisation urged the State Government to carry out eviction drives in Jorhat district in the same manner as has been undertaken in other parts of Assam.
They demanded immediate intervention by the district administration and the Jorhat Municipal Board (JMB) to reclaim the encroached public lands.
The protesters also voiced concern over a recent spate of crimes in Jorhat, including incidents involving the killing of youths, and demanded urgent steps to address the law-and-order situation.
Following the rally, the Veer Lachit Sena submitted a memorandum with nine demands to the district administration and sent a separate copy to the Chief Minister.
The organisation warned that if no action was initiated within a week, it may proceed independently to reclaim the encroached lands.
It may be mentioned that the district administration had carried out an eviction drive last month at Kabarstan Road, where shops and a house constructed illegally on JMB land were demolished.
The Veer Lachit Sena had earlier alleged that the land had been encroached upon by a contractor identified by the group as an illegal Bangladeshi migrant.
