GUWAHATI, Dec 16: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday announced that the historic Vrindabani Vastra, woven in Assam and currently preserved in a museum in London, will be brought back to the State for public exhibition in 2027, saying the initiative would familiarise people with Assam’s rich weaving heritage and cultural legacy.
Addressing beneficiaries at programmes held in Lamding and Barpeta Assembly constituencies, the chief minister said the Vrindabani Vastra is a symbol of Assam’s civilisational depth and artistic excellence.
He said its exhibition in Assam would allow people, especially the younger generation, to reconnect with the State’s traditional weaving skills and historical craftsmanship.
Sarma made the announcement while ceremonially launching the distribution of entrepreneurship seed capital cheques under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan, a flagship initiative aimed at empowering women through enterprise.
He said the government’s focus on women-led entrepreneurship is closely linked with preserving and promoting Assam’s traditional knowledge systems, including handloom and weaving.
The chief minister said the exhibition of the Vrindabani Vastra would serve as a source of inspiration for weavers and artisans across the State and reaffirm Assam’s place in India’s cultural and artistic history.
He added that such initiatives are essential to ensure that traditional crafts are not lost and continue to thrive alongside modern economic growth.
Sarma also informed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam on December 20–21 to inaugurate the new terminal building of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati and lay the foundation stone of the Rs 10,600-crore Ammonia-Urea project at Namrup.
The chief minister was addressing separate programmes in Lamding and Barpeta while distributing seed capital cheques to women beneficiaries under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan, under which 32 lakh women across Assam are being supported in phases to become economically self-reliant.
