JAGIROAD, March 23: A pregnant wild elephant died at the Sonaikuchi Reserve Forest in Jagiroad on Saturday in Morigaon district.
According to sources, the elephant had slipped and accidentally come into contact with solar-powered fencing while coming out from the forest in search of food. The fence was installed by the state forest department to prevent human-elephant conflict.
Locals alleged that a shortage of food and negligence on the part of the forest department have led to the death of the female elephant. Officials of the forest department allegedly visited the spot and recovered the carcass.
