HAMREN, March 6: Prioritising auditory health among the youth, an extensive awareness program was organised at Borkok ME School in West Karbi Anglong on Thursday. The event was held in observance of World Hearing Day under the aegis of the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Deafness (NPPCD), supported by the National Health Mission (NHM).
This year’s global theme, “From Communities to Classrooms: Hearing Care for All Children,” served as the cornerstone of the day’s activities, emphasising that early detection is the first line of defence against lifelong hearing impairment.
The program moved beyond standard lectures, utilising interactive formats to capture the interest of the students. Students participated in quiz and drawing contests centred on the mechanics of hearing and health. Local performances were integrated to foster community spirit. Health officials conducted sensitisation sessions on the “dos and don’ts” of ear care, such as avoiding the use of sharp objects and protecting ears from excessive noise.
Beyond awareness, the event provided immediate clinical value. A dedicated health check-up was conducted for all attending students by medical professionals. This screening aimed to identify underlying auditory issues or infections that might otherwise go unnoticed in a classroom setting.
To ensure the message reached home, informative “Ear Care” leaflets were distributed to both students and faculty, providing a permanent reference for maintaining ear hygiene and recognising early warning signs of hearing loss.
Key attendees and organisers included Pakeeza P Barbhuyan, District Community Officer (DCO); RBSK Mobile Health Team (MHT) members and local ASHA supervisors and school faculty.
The event concluded on a high note with a prize distribution ceremony, celebrating the winners of the day’s competitions and reinforcing the community’s commitment to ensuring no child is left behind due to preventable hearing loss.
