GUWAHATI, July 31: Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is enhancing safety and efficiency by installing dual gate phones at level crossing (LC) gates across its network, supplementing the existing gate phones. This initiative aims to reduce the failure duration of gate phones, which often leads to operational issues. By facilitating seamless communication between gatemen and station masters, dual gate phones ensure timely coordination, thereby minimising punctuality losses and improving safety measures.
Out of 1,447 level crossing gates in the NFR network, 1,030 gates have been equipped with dual gate phones to date. Non-interlocked level crossing gates have also been provided with voice recording facilities. This initiative underscores NFR’s commitment to enhancing railway efficiency and passenger safety.
The installation includes 40 LC gates in the Katihar division, 253 gates in the Alipurduar division, 290 gates in the Rangiya division, 163 gates in the Lumding division, and 284 gates in the Tinsukia division.
In June 2024, 8 LC gates in the Katihar division and 4 LC gates in the Rangiya division were also equipped with voice recording facilities.
