GUWAHATI, Feb 20: India’s rapid progress in artificial intelligence is closely linked with its expanding semiconductor ecosystem, India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) President and CEO Ashok Chandak said at the India AI Impact Summit 2026.
He described the summit as a defining moment highlighting the convergence of AI strategy, semiconductor development and global technology partnerships, with participation from heads of state, ministers, global AI leaders and industry stakeholders.
Chandak said India is positioning itself at the centre of global AI transformation through a comprehensive approach that combines policy frameworks, talent development and infrastructure expansion.
He noted that recent initiatives include the release of AI governance guidelines, expansion of AI fellowship programmes and strengthening of safety and standards institutions.
On infrastructure, he said India is rapidly scaling sovereign computing capacity, with tens of thousands of GPUs already operational and more planned in the coming months.
He added that large-scale investments projected in AI infrastructure, research and electronics manufacturing are expected to support one of the fastest-growing AI ecosystems globally.
Chandak emphasised that global leadership in AI depends heavily on secure semiconductor supply chains, including advanced chips, packaging, embedded systems and high-performance computing infrastructure.
He said India’s expanding fabrication, assembly and electronics manufacturing programmes, combined with its strong chip design talent base, are positioning the country as both a major AI adopter and a design-led innovation hub.
Highlighting broader governance aspects, Chandak said India is also seeking to play a role in shaping global AI norms by promoting principles focused on trust, accountability, data sovereignty and inclusive access.
He said the parallel growth of AI and semiconductor capabilities reflects India’s effort to build a complete innovation ecosystem spanning design, computing infrastructure, manufacturing and deployment.
