GUWHATI, Feb 4: On the occasion of World Cancer Day, Axis Bank has reaffirmed its dedication to supporting cancer research and patient care initiatives in India. The bank, one of the largest private sector financial institutions in the country, has partnered with three reputed cancer organizations—National Cancer Grid (NCG) under Tata Memorial Centre, the Indian Cancer Society (ICS), and St. Jude India Childcare Centres. These collaborations aim to enhance India’s digital capabilities in oncology, improve access to cancer treatment, promote early diagnosis, and advance research and innovation.
According to the Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN), cancer cases in India are expected to rise significantly, with projections indicating a 57.5 percent increase from 2020 levels, reaching 2.08 million cases by 2040. In response to this growing health crisis, Axis Bank welcomed the recent budget announcement by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to establish cancer daycare centres in every district, with 200 centres planned over the next three years.
Speaking on the bank’s efforts, Vijay Mulbagal, Group Executive for Strategic Programs & Sustainability at Axis Bank, highlighted the institution’s commitment to strengthening India’s fight against cancer. “Our partnership with key institutions engaged in cancer research, treatment, and patient care aligns with our vision of building long-term capabilities in India’s healthcare sector. Together with our partners, we aim to make advanced cancer care accessible to all those in need,” he said.
Axis Bank’s cancer care initiatives focus on three key areas. The first is advancing cancer research, innovation, and training through a multi-year partnership with the National Cancer Grid (NCG). The bank is supporting initiatives such as a national tele-consultation platform for follow-up care, a National Tumour Biobank, digitization of oncology-specific electronic medical records (EMRs), and the establishment of a Virtual Skills Lab to train healthcare professionals. These efforts are designed to benefit over 300 hospitals affiliated with the NCG and contribute to the broader healthcare ecosystem.
The second area of focus is strengthening preventive care in collaboration with the Indian Cancer Society (ICS). Through this partnership, Axis Bank is supporting screening and awareness camps for oral, cervical, and breast cancer, with a target of reaching over 800,000 beneficiaries, including community health workers. The initiative also provides financial assistance through the Dr. Arun Kurkure Initiation and Treatment Fund and the Cancer Cure Treatment Fund, aimed at helping low-income patients access diagnostics and treatment.
The third initiative focuses on patient support, particularly for children undergoing cancer treatment. Axis Bank has partnered with St. Jude India Childcare Centres to establish a new childcare facility in Hyderabad. Inaugurated on January 26, the centre offers 26 family units, providing a safe and clean accommodation for families of children receiving cancer treatment in major cities.
Through these initiatives, Axis Bank aims to create scalable and sustainable solutions for cancer care, reinforcing its broader mission of empowering communities and fostering societal resilience.
