Mumbai, May 1: An arms supplier involved in a shooting incident at actor Salman Khan’s residence, identified as Anuj Thapan, aged 32, died by suicide in police custody on Wednesday.
Thapan, arrested from Punjab on April 26, reportedly hanged himself in a toilet attached to the police lock-up at 11 am. He was among 10 inmates in the lock-up, guarded by four to five policemen.
Thapan and another accused, Sonu Subhash Chander, were allegedly responsible for supplying the weapons used in the April 14 shooting outside Khan’s Mumbai home. Investigations into Thapan’s suicide are underway.
Former senior police officer PK Jain stated that any death in police custody is treated as a murder case, with all station policemen questioned by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Jain also discussed the importance of regular monitoring to prevent suicides in lock-ups. Two other accused, Vicky Gupta and Sagar Pal, alleged to have fired the shots, are also in custody. They were seen on CCTV leaving the scene on a motorcycle. All four accused are believed to be connected to jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, known for various crimes as per the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
