Baghdad, Jan 4: The Islamic State claimed responsibility for two explosions in Iran that resulted in the death of at least 103 people on Thursday.
The explosions occurred at a commemoration ceremony for commander Qassem Soleimani in Kerman, Iran. Soleimani was killed in a US drone attack in 2020.
The claim of responsibility was posted by the Islamic State on its Telegram channels, according to a Reuters report. The bombs exploded near the Saheb al-Zaman Mosque in Kerman, Soleimani’s hometown and burial site.
The attack coincided with the fourth anniversary of Soleimani’s death. State media reported that at least 170 people were wounded in the bombings. There were also reports of a shooting in Kerman on Thursday, a day after the bombings.
Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported that the bombs were carried in two bags and detonated remotely. Soleimani was the head of the Quds Force, the foreign operations arm of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.
He was declared a ‘living martyr’ by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and was considered a hero for his role in defeating the Islamic State jihadist group in Iraq and Syria.
