GUWAHATI, April 26: A ‘Journalists-Human Rights Defenders Interactive Capacity Building Programme’ is to be held in New Delhi on May 3, 2022.

The programme is aimed to deepen the understanding of complex human rights issues and increasing restrictions; both traditional and non-traditional, especially on the journalists who report on these issues.

The interactive programme will entail specific sessions on various national and international human rights mechanisms including the Press Council of India, National Human Rights Commission and the UN human rights mechanisms, in particular, UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion and Expression.

Senior staff reporter of The Hills Times Nilomoni Borah from Assam has received the invitation for the programme. “Many journalists face harassment, intimidation, and prosecution especially for reporting on human rights issues, conflict situations or politically contested issues. Often, journalists do not get the exposure to relevant human rights mechanisms which is necessary with respect to the challenges they face while performing their duties,” said the senior reporter.
