JORHAT, May 14: The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department has vaccinated over one lakh cattle and buffalo for FMD (Foot and Mouth Disease) and 20,451 heifers for Brucellosis disease in the ongoing vaccination drive by the department in the district initiated two months ago as part of preparedness for the summer disasters such as hailstorms, floods, erosion, submerging grasslands, etc.
An Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department official informed that under the ‘Moromor Jorhat’ initiative of the district administration and under the aegis of the National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP), the department has been organising vaccination and awareness programmes across the district on a large-scale.
The department has also inoculated 35,000 doses of HSBQ (hemorrhagic septicemia and black quarter) vaccines to cattle and buffalo so far. The vaccine protects the animals from both diseases.
Further, the department administered about 4000 doses of swine fever vaccines to pigs against classical swine fever disease, which has affected several farms in the district. The department received 18000 doses of the vaccine, and the vaccination drive was underway to use the remaining stock.
The department has also carried out vaccination on 18000 cattle against LSD (Lumpy Skin Disease) so far out of the 33,000 doses received and is continuing the drive. Under the Rashtriya Krishi Bikash Yojana, the department has vaccinated 400 stray and pet dogs against rabies, and the drive is underway.
The government further organised 12 health camps for buffalo khuties (Sheds) providing vaccination for HSBQ diseases along with distribution of deworming agents, supplements, and mineral mixers under the initiative of the Assam Livestock Development Agency (ALDA).
The official mentioned that the ongoing vaccination campaign has been carried out by the department officials and field staff with the support of ‘Pashusakhies’, ‘Krishisakhies’ and ‘Jivikasakhies’ engaged under the Assam State Rural Livelihood Mission in different Gaon Panchayats.
They (Pashusakhies, Krishisakhies, and Jivikasakhies) are actively helping in the smooth arrangement of the programmes along with the registration of the animals in web portals, the official added.
