AGARTALA, Jan 16: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced on Friday that Assam is keen on exporting its surplus electricity to Bangladesh through Tripura, which has been supplying power to the neighboring country since 2016.
Speaking to reporters during a programme for distributing woollen clothes and blankets in Agartala, Dr. Saha said Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Tripura on Thursday to discuss key regional issues.

“The main discussion took place at the Churaibari check post along the Assam–Tripura border. The road on both sides is very narrow, causing severe traffic congestion. I raised the matter of widening the road to facilitate smoother movement of vehicles,” Saha said.
The chief minister added that electricity was another major topic of discussion.
“The Assam Chief Minister informed me that Assam, like Tripura, is generating surplus electricity and is keen to export it to Bangladesh. Since Tripura already has an established arrangement for supplying power to Bangladesh, Assam expressed interest in using Tripura as a transmission route for its electricity,” he said.
Saha also briefed Chief Minister Sarma about Tripura’s existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bangladesh, which is set for renewal in March this year.
He affirmed that Tripura remains committed to continuing its electricity supply to Bangladesh and, following the MoU’s renewal, Assam will also be able to channel its surplus power through the state.
