SHILLONG, AUGUST 7: The Meghalaya government formally ended its search operation on Wednesday after the body of Teseng M. Sangma, a sub-divisional agriculture officer, was found near the Pelga waterfalls. The body was found several kilometers away from where Sangma was last spotted on Sunday.
Sangma had disappeared during a family excursion close to Sella Wari in Edenbari, near Tura in the South West Garo Hills district. Officials say he was swept by the powerful currents of the swollen Ganol River while participating in the outing.
Following the accident, a huge multi-agency rescue mission was initiated. Troops from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Special Rescue Team (SRT), Fire & Emergency Services, Tura police, and local volunteers worked day and night in difficult conditions, including continuous rain showers and difficult terrain.
West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Abraham T. Sangma confirmed the sad find and offered his condolences. “This has been a tragic loss,” he stated. “I want to congratulate the tireless efforts of our rescue teams and gratefully acknowledge the cooperation displayed by local people. Their commitment and solidarity in such adverse conditions really stood out.”
