Shillong, May 20 (NNN): In order to provide better treatment for patients with neuro-related diseases, the director of neurologist of Madras Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (MIOT) hospital, Chennai, Dr Shankar Balakrishnan on Thursday informed that the hospital is in the process to tie up with the government of Meghalaya.
Speaking to media persons here, Dr Shankar said MIOT Institute Hospital Chennai is offering treatment of such diseases which is called deep brain stimulation (DBS).
“There are various means of medications for the minor neurodegenerative disorder but for those who do not respond to medication treatment, there are advanced treatments like surgery which includes stimulation and insertion of a pacemaker and this pacemaker does not include the opening of the brain but it is just a device to monitor the functioning of the brain and heart to monitor the functioning of other organs,” said Dr Shankar.
Dr Shankar said that the MIOT hospital Chennai is collaborating with Bethany hospital, Shillong with an objective to provide treatment to such patients as the state still lacks infrastructure for the treatment of the neurodegenerative disorder.
He added that soon the officials of Bethany hospital, Shillong and MIOT, Chennai will meet officials from the Health department to work out means and ways in which proper infrastructure and experts can be available for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders in Meghalaya itself.
On the cost of such treatment, Dr Hrishikesh Sarkar said that the cost is determined by the preceded by the cost of a pre-operative workout or surgical pre-op, pre-surgical work and depending on the type of epilepsy or on the duration of epilepsy, the actual overall cost can be known.
“It would be about Rs 40,000 to Rs 80,000 just to finish basic work to identify whether a patient would benefit from surgery and after proper examining the patients an actual cost can be determined but for major surgery, it would cost around Rs 3 lakh to Rs 7 lakhs,” said Dr Hrishikesh.
