Aizawl, May 29: Mizoram continues to face devastating impacts from Cyclone Remal, with catastrophic landslides and torrential rains causing widespread destruction and a rising death toll. As of 7 pm on May 28, the number of fatalities has increased to 27, with numerous individuals still missing across various regions of the state.
The Melthum locality remains the most severely affected area, with a staggering 14 deaths reported. The tragedy unfolded when a massive landslide, triggered by the cyclone, cascaded from an old quarry and obliterated three houses. Among the missing are five locals and two of the three non-locals known to be in the area at the time of the disaster.
In the nearby Hlimen area, four deaths have been confirmed, with two individuals still unaccounted for. The Salem locality has been particularly hard-hit, with an entire family – a husband, wife, and their daughter – perishing in the landslide.
Other areas are also reeling from the cyclone’s impact. Falkawn has reported two fatalities, while Lungsei and Kelsih have each recorded one death. In Aibawk, two individuals have been confirmed dead.
Rescue and relief operations are in full swing, with authorities deploying all available resources to search for the missing and provide assistance to those affected by this devastating natural calamity. Efforts continue to ensure that survivors receive the necessary support and aid during this challenging time.
