IMPHAL, May 4 (NNN): The death of a man allegedly in police custody in Manipur triggered protests by locals who demanded termination of the police officer and personnel involved in the case from their services.
A local joint action committee (JAC) formed in connection with the death has decided not to accept the dead body until the concerned authority addresses their demands.
Arambam Nanao (35), son of late A Dhananjoy of Sagolband Kangabam Leikai, Imphal West district, pulled up by police in an effort to recover a certain amount indebted to him died at RIMS hospital on Monday.
Family as well as locals alleged that he succumbed to brutal torture in police custody.
According to the family members, Nanao was picked up from his own locality by a police team led by a sub-inspector of Imphal police station at around 9 am.
The same police team brought Nanao back to his home in the evening. However, the police had to rush him to the hospital after he collapsed.
He died at the casualty ward of the RIMS hospital later.
The dead body was transferred to RIMS morgue after registering a case.
The dead body is lying at RIMS morgue as an unclaimed body as family members backed by the locals who formed the JAC refused to take back the body for performing the last rites.
Family members alleged that he succumbed to excessive torture in the police custody and demanded appropriate action against the police officers and personnel involved in the case.
Locals staged a protest in the locality of the deceased and registered a strong condemnation while claiming that Nanao died in police custody.
The protesters demanded that befitting action should be initiated against the police officer and personnel involved in the case so that such incidents of death in the police custody do not repeat in future.
A woman leader declared that the dead body will not be taken back for last rites while demanding termination of the police officer and personnel involved in the case are terminated from their services.
