DIMAPUR, March 13: Handloom sector support items, including looms (frame looms and loin looms), accessories, solar lighting units, warping drums and other essential equipment, under the special cluster development programme (SCDP) were distributed to weavers at ICM hall at Toluvi, Dimapur, on Thursday, aiming to empower local weavers and promote sustainable handloom development in Dimapur.
The initiative covers four villages of Baman Pukhri A, Baman Pukhri B, Darogajan and Kushiabill, benefiting over 200 weavers.
Key interventions of the programme included skill upgradation, product development, exposure visits, and financial assistance for works sheds and lighting units.
Speaking at the launch of the SCDP under the national handicrafts development programme in Dimapur, adviser to industries and commerce department Hekani Jakhalu called the initiative the beginning of a larger effort to empower women weavers in Nagaland.
She said it was aimed at equipping the weavers with the required skills needed to sustain themselves through training and distribution of equipment.
Jakhalu urged the weavers to focus on improving product designs, quality, and marketing strategies to compete in larger markets.
She asserted that the government is committed to supporting them through further training in product design and refinement to help Nagaland’s handloom industry gain global recognition.
Jakhalu also said the industries and commerce department is working on developing a swaddle wrap designed and made in Nagaland as a unique brand.
Expressing hope that the Dimapur cluster would set an example for other clusters, she asked the weavers to take full advantage of the support provided and elevate their craft to new heights.
