IMPHAL, April 8 (IANS): The Manipur Police on Thursday seized around 3 kg gold valued around Rs 1.50 crore – suspected to have been smuggled from Myanmar, and apprehended one person in this connection, officials said.
Acting on information, the police intercepted a car in Kakching district. During checking, 18 bars of gold were found.
Appreciating the police, Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh tweeted: “Gold smuggler busted with large amounts of gold! As we intensify the crackdown against the smugglers, the Kakching Police has apprehended one Prakash Kshetri (23) a resident of Moreh, Ward No 8 along with 18 bars of gold weighing 2.9 kgs during frisking at Pallel check-post today.”
After the necessary formalities, the seized gold and the arrested individual were handed over to the Customs Department for further necessary action.
Police officers said that the gold might have been smuggled from Myanmar through the Moreh – a rapidly developing trade point in India along the border with Myanmar, with the city of Tamu on the other side of the border.
