IMPHAL, Nov 3 (NNN): A large number of street vendors on Wednesday thronged the premises of the Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) office in Imphal demanding their vending space.

Among the protesting vendors, some sold their goods inside the premises.

In a move to ease the traffic congestion on the streets in Imphal, particularly in Khwairamband Keithel area, IMC allocated a space for the street vendors to run their business at specific times.

The street vendors are allowed to do their business at the said space on two shifts, the morning shift being from 6 am to noon and the evening shift 1 pm to 7 pm on a daily basis.

The street vendors are allowed to occupy the space on a first come first serve basis and no vender is allowed to occupy a space permanently.

With this arrangement, vendors are banned from selling their things on the street and other spaces available on the sides of the streets from October 16 last.

The protesting street vendors, however, alleged that many of them could not get space to sell their goods even if they come first as some vendors remained to occupy spaces as if the spaces were permanently allotted to them by the IMC authority.

In protest against the act of some vendors, a large number of the street vendors thronged the IMC office premises, demanding space.

They also displayed placards demanding strict implementation of rules mentioned in the notification issued by the IMC authority.

At the same time, some vendors started vending the goods they accompanied inside the IMC premises as a mark of protest.

Talking to reporters, the protesters alleged that their right to sell goods in the Khwairamband Keithel has been violated by a few sections of the vendors who openly violated the IMC notice.
