IMPHAL, June 11 (NNN): Yoga practitioners, who staged a sit-in-protest in Imphal on Sunday, announced that they will skip this year’s International Day of Yoga, instead they will observe it as a day of mourning for the victims of violence unfolding in Manipur.
The yoga practitioners staged the sit-in-protest under the aegis of the All Manipur Yoga Fraternity Union at Ima Khunthokhanbi Shanglen in Imphal’s Thangmeiband on Sunday calling for an end to the ongoing violence and restore peace in the state.
Attending the protest, vice-president of Bharat Swabhiman Trust Th Rajen told reporters that the yoga practitioners have decided to skip participation in the upcoming International Day of Yoga which falls on June 21.
“Instead of celebrating the day, we will observe a day of mourning for the victims of the violence,” he said.
The violent clashes that unfolded in the state since May 3 have claimed more than 100 lives and injured hundreds others besides rendering homeless to thousands after their homes were torched or damaged.
Calling for restoration of peace and normalcy in the state, Rajen urged the government to control the militants behind attacks on the villages in the periphery of the valley districts.
