Imphal, May 31: In the wake of Cyclone Remal, the Indian Army and Assam Rifles have launched extensive relief and rescue operations in Manipur to combat the severe flooding caused by torrential rains. Already on the ground for internal security duties, the forces rapidly shifted focus to aid the flood-affected citizens.
So far, over 4,000 people have been rescued from the flood-hit regions of Manipur, including more than 1,500 women and 800 children. The security forces have also distributed food packets and drinking water to ensure that the basic needs of the affected populations are met. Medical teams from the Army have treated 102 individuals, including 55 women and 24 children, providing critical healthcare support.
The relentless rains have led to breaches in the Imphal River, resulting in extensive flooding in low-lying areas and forcing many residents to evacuate. Responding swiftly, Army engineers conducted thorough reconnaissance along the river. They identified three major breaches and have already successfully sealed two. Efforts are ongoing to address the third breach, which spans approximately 22-25 meters, located at Kontha Khabam in Imphal East district.
The Indian Army remains committed to alleviating the impacts of the flooding, ensuring the safety and well-being of Manipur’s residents through continued efforts and support.
