Imphal, Nov 13: The Manipur government has extended the suspension of mobile internet, data services, and VPN services in select districts to maintain law and order and prevent the spread of misinformation and hate speech.
The ban will last for an additional five days, ending at 7.45 pm on November 18, 2023, as a precaution to ensure the smooth operation of the state administration. This decision follows reports of a firing exchange between two communities in the fringe areas of several Manipur districts such as Bishnupur, Churachandpur, Imphal East, Imphal West, and Kangpokpi. The order was issued on Monday by Manipur Home Commissioner T Ranjing.
The State Home Commissioner announced that the state government has commenced the operation of mobile towers on a trial basis in several district headquarters unaffected by the recent violence. This action is in line with the directives of the Manipur High Court. However, internet restrictions, which began on May 3, 2023, remain in place, barring two days of reprieve on September 23 and 24.
