GUWAHATI, Jan 17: President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday unveiled the busts of three freedom fighters of Meghalaya at the Raj Bhawan in Shillong ahead of her departure from the capital city.
Meghalaya Governor Phagu Chauhan and chief minister Conrad Sangma were also present on the occasion.
The President paid tributes to the three freedom fighters, U Tirot Sing, U Kiang Nangbah and Pa Togan Sangma and unveiled their busts. She also planted a tree inside the premises of the Raj Bhawan on the occasion.
Murmu was on a two-day maiden visit to the state, during which she attended the inauguration ceremony of the Meghalaya Games, 2024 in Tura. She also virtually laid the foundation of two tourism projects and inaugurated two crucial road projects during her stay in the state.
Meanwhile, Conrad Sangma also took the occasion to thank the President for her visit to the state and hoped to host her again in the near future.
“Before her departure from Shillong, Hon’ble President of India, Smti. Droupadi Murmu ji planted a tree at Raj Bhavan. We are immensely grateful to her for her gracious presence in our State, joining us for the Meghalaya Games and meeting our people and we look forward to hosting her again,” said Conrad Sangma in a post on ‘X’
“Hon’ble President of India paid tributes to and unveiled the bust size statues of 3 Freedom Fighters from Meghalaya at Raj Bhavan, Shillong— U Tirot Sing, U Kiang Nangbah and Pa Togan Sangma,” he further said on ‘X’.
On the other hand, President Droupadi Murmu journey was delayed by over four hours on Wednesday, as her helicopter could not take off on time due to inclement weather. She was scheduled to fly to Karbi Anglong in Assam to attend the golden jubilee celebrations of the Karbi Youth Festival. However, her journey to the state was cancelled due to bad weather.
