Naga Women In Manipur Felicitate Olish

IMPHAL, April 20 (NNN): Naga Women Union (NWU) president Asha Wungnam said that SS Olish is the second elected MLA from among the Naga women in the Manipur Legislative Assembly. Hangmila Shaiza was the first Naga woman MLA in the state who was elected in 1990. It has been after 32 years that a Naga woman was elected as an MLA in Manipur, said the NWU president.

Asha Wungnam said this in the felicitation programme of SS Olish on Tuesday at DSSS, Mantripukhri, Imphal. The programme was organised by NWU.

SS Olish was elected from Chandel assembly constituency in the recently held Manipur Legislative Assembly election.

Asha Wungnam then expressed her happiness that a Naga woman was elected as an MLA again. She also said that every Naga woman is happy that a Naga woman is now in the highest decision-making platform in the state.

Asha Wungnam then said that NWU is an apex organisation of Naga women in Manipur state which “is mobilising and giving awareness to achieve our goal”. She added, “That is, enabling Naga women to be conscious and assertive with regard to our rights for equal participation at all levels”.

Speaking on the occasion, SS Olish thanked the NWU for organising such a programme. She encouraged society to see that more and more women participate in decision making. Before she joined electoral politics, SS Olish was involved in student union activities and eventually became a women leader.

Olish also said that she will try her best to promote women in the state irrespective of hills and the valley.

Federating units of Naga Women Union participated in the programme in their respective traditional attires.  Gifts were also exchanged in the event.
