GUWAHATI, July 28: Director general of police (DGP) Rupin Sharma has acknowledged the involvement of a uniformed officer in drugs and illegal weapons trafficking and assured that the department was taking steps to implement mechanisms to prevent such occurrences.
Commenting on the July 10 recovery of a large quantity of ammunition concealed in rice bags intercepted car at 6 Mile in Chümoukedima , Sharma while speaking to a section of reporters at Raj Bhavan here on Thursday, disclosed that of the six arrested, one of them was police inspector.
A total of 2,480 rounds of live ammunitions were seized during the operation as per reports. The recovery followed a tip off received by Dimapur Police about the planned transportation of illegal arms and ammunition to Manipur.
Sharma said the investigation was more or less complete, while six persons had been arrested, including the police inspector.
“We have established the money trail and for whom the ammunitions were meant for. It was meant to be delivered to someone in Manipur. We are not sure from where it could have gone to those people, but all those involved have been arrested,” he disclosed.
Commenting on the police inspector who had been arrested, he claimed that it was clear from the investigation so far, that he was acting alone and did not have any accomplice from the police department.
The DGP said the department had written to the state government for initiating disciplinary action against the police officer and also placing him under suspension.
Asked how police personnel could be trusted when they themselves indulged in such crimes, he remarked that the policemen too were humans and could commit such acts, like any other individual.
“But, rest assured. Whoever is committing such a crime will be taken to task. There will be no prejudice or favouritism towards anyone,” he assured.
