Nagaland observes Voters’ Day with a call to empower first-time voters

DIMAPUR, Jan 25: The 15th National Voters’ Day (NVD) was observed with a state-level programme at Patkai Christian College (Autonomous) under Chumoukedima district on Saturday, underscoring the need to educate first-time voters and empower them to make informed decisions.
The celebration also focused on spreading awareness about voter registration and the significance of choosing the right leaders.
The event was held under the theme “Nothing like voting, I vote for sure,” aimed to promote electoral participation and raise awareness about the importance of voting.

Gracing the programme as the special guest, principal director, school education, Thavaseelan K, highlighted the importance of youth participation in the electoral process and its role in strengthening democracy.
Thavaseelan urged the youth to recognise the power of their vote, stating, every single vote has the potential to accelerate the democratic process.

“It is crucial not to be influenced by external pressures and to vote responsibly,” he said.
He also exhorted the young voters to set an example by motivating their family members to participate in elections, fostering a culture of active citizenship.
Nagaland chief electoral officer Vyasan R commended the intention behind hosting the celebration at Patkai, highlighting its significance in engaging the younger generation.
He stressed that the nation’s future is in safe hands when the youth understand the value of voting and take responsibility in choosing their leaders wisely.
He also acknowledged the crucial roles played by teachers and police personnel in the pre-election bonding process, ensuring an inclusive and transparent electoral framework.

Chümoukedima DC and district election officer Polan John also highlighted the vital role of young voters in strengthening democracy.
 ”It is crucial to encourage the young generation who are eligible to vote, motivate first-time voters, and empower the young minds of our society to take part in the democratic process,” he stated.
The celebration concluded with a call to action for young voters to participate actively in the democratic process and contribute to a stronger, more accountable governance system.

The NVD pledge was administered on the occasion, emphasising the commitment to strengthening democracy. A special presentation was also given by the Electoral Literacy Club of Patkai Christian College.
