GUWAHATI, July 20: In a bid to ensure affordable meals and packaged drinking water for passengers traveling in general second class, NF Railway has launched a new initiative. Economy meals, snacks, and combo meals will now be available through extended service counters stationed near general second-class coaches at select platforms. The meals will be sourced from the Refreshment Rooms (RRs) and Jan Ahaars (JAs) of IRCTC.

To begin with, 64 railway stations across various zones have been identified to offer economical meals and packaged drinking water near general second class coaches. Among these, seven stations under NFR – New Coochbehar, New Alipurduar, Katihar, New Tinsukia, Kamakhya, Naharlagun, and Rangiya – will provide this service, with the counters strategically located near the general second class coaches at platforms.
The provision of these service counters at the platforms is on a trial basis for six months. Two types of meals will be available – meal type – 1 priced at Rs 20 (including GST), which includes 7 pooris, dry aloo veg, and pickle; and meal type – 2- snack meal costing Rs 50 (including GST), offering an assortment of South Indian rice or rajma/chole – rice or khichdi or kulche/bhature – chole or pav-bhaji or masala dosa. Additionally, sealed 200 ml packaged drinking water will also be provided.
More stations are being identified and will be gradually covered under this extended service counter scheme to ensure the availability of economical meals and water for the convenience and satisfaction of passengers.
