Sikkim’s Pakyong Hosts Thrilling Inter School Cricket Tournament Finals

Gangtok, May 27: The finals of the Inter School Cricket Tournament 2024, organized by the Pakyong District Cricket Committee in collaboration with the Sikkim Cricket Association (SICA), were held on May 27 at St. Xavier’s School ground. The event saw active participation from local schools, with distinguished guests Tashi Chophel, DC Pakyong, and Rinzing Chophel Rai, ASP Pakyong, in attendance.

In his address, DC Pakyong praised the committee for organizing the tournament, emphasizing the importance of such events in nurturing young talent and providing exposure. He lauded the participation of girls in sports and acknowledged the dedication of their coaches. Encouraging the students, he urged them to showcase their talents and aim for national and international competitions.

BK Dhamala, DFO Social Forestry and President of the Pakyong District Cricket Committee, expressed his gratitude to the committee for their support and cooperation. He shared his hopes for the young players and extended best wishes to the teams.

Sonam Palden Bhutia, a senior coach at SICA, highlighted the association’s efforts to promote the overall development of children through sports. He emphasized that sports training enhances interpersonal skills and strengthens relationships among peers and teachers. Bhutia assured continued support from the association to uplift young athletes.

The finals featured matches in both the boys’ and girls’ categories. In the girls’ category, Amba Secondary School faced Rangpo Senior Secondary School. Amba SS, after winning the toss and opting to bat first, set a target of 51 runs. Despite a strong effort from Rangpo SSS, they fell short by 2 runs, resulting in a victory for Amba SS.

In the boys’ category, Rhenock Senior Secondary School competed against St. Xavier’s School. Rhenock SSS, batting first, scored 130 runs. St. Xavier’s School, despite a determined effort, could not chase down the target and lost by 12 runs.

Normit Lepcha from Amba SS and Bitu Kumar Shah from Rhenock SSS were declared the players of the match in their respective categories.

The event also saw the presence of BP Sharma, JD Education; Father Francis Banerjee, Principal of St. Xavier’s School; various dignitaries from different departments; officials from SICA; coaches; and members of the general public. The matches were officiated by SICA umpires Pramod Kr Singh and Data Ram Regi, with Neela Rai and Karma Thilay Bhutia serving as scorers.
