IMPHAL, Mar 22: A five-member delegation of Supreme Court judges, led by Justice B.R. Gavai, arrived in Imphal, Manipur, on Saturday to assess the ongoing violence in the state and bolster humanitarian support for those affected.
The delegation includes Justices Surya Kant, Vikram Nath, M.M. Sundresh, K.V. Viswanathan, and N. Kotishwar. The judges are scheduled to visit relief camps in violence-hit areas later today to interact with Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and evaluate their conditions.
As the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), Justice Gavai will also virtually inaugurate legal services camps and medical camps across all districts of Manipur. These initiatives aim to provide legal aid, medical assistance, and access to government welfare schemes for displaced families.
Additionally, new legal aid clinics will be set up in Imphal East, Imphal West, and Ukhrul districts to assist victims in securing healthcare benefits, pensions, employment opportunities, and identity document reconstruction. Relief materials will also be distributed among those in need.
The visit follows growing concerns over the humanitarian crisis in Manipur. On March 18, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh welcomed the decision of the Supreme Court judges to visit relief camps on March 22, emphasizing the need for legal and humanitarian intervention in the conflict-torn state.
