“(We) have resolved that if the MDA government  fails to fulfill our demand then we may proceed with our agitational programme or move to the Meghalaya High Court to fight for equal pay for equal work in the future,” president of the association Tengsrang K Sangma said in a statement issued on Sunday.

He informed that the delegation of the association had submitted a memorandum to the Governor Satya Pal Malik and to the Education minister Lahkmen Rymbui last year but they have turned a deaf ear to the plight of the teachers.

He said Rs 12,000 is very less an amount for the teachers to run their families keeping in mind the hike in prices of essential commodities and other services. He said the government should stop discriminating the teachers in the state.

Quoting an RTI reply by the Directorate of School Education and Literacy, Sangma said that the state government would require Rs 3,04,20,000 per month for enhancing the salary of the 4th teachers to Rs 20,000.
